Finding the plus size fashionista inside!

Finding the plus size fashionista inside
by Nicole Anderson - JR Plus Fashion Editor

I’ve found recently that a lot of plus size girls around my age (24) have had issues finding their fashionista within. Growing up, I was always bigger than the other girls. Clothes and fashion were not really a part of my life. Let’s just say that I didn’t make the greatest fashion choices at times. For me it was band tee shirts, Dickie brand pants in every color cut into capris, and men’s jeans. I was a tomboy. After high school I started working at a department store part time and I started to tap into the fashionista inside me. Over the next year, I started to notice that the Junior’s department that I was working in had less and less that I was able to fit into. Perhaps I was getting larger, but I swear they were using less fabric to make those tiny little tops. After that year I moved out of the great state of Iowa and made an interesting decision to move to Montana. That is where the full-blown plus size fabulousness burst out of me! Iowa by no means is a fashion mecca but it has some really great things to offer. Montana, where I was located anyway, was dry as a bone for ladies of the plus size persuasion. So this is where I really had to use my skills to get the looks that I wanted and needed. Over the next two years with no Lane Bryant, Torrid, or DEB in sight, I learned that with style its quality over quantity. Every fashionista wants the latest and greatest fashions and is willing to jump on the trend train as fast as their little size zero butts can take them. But for the larger ladies of the world it’s not that easy. In Montana I noticed that if I had a few key pieces in my wardrobe that I would be able to rock the streets of MT like it was my own personal fashion runway. Girls in the town that I was in loved fashion and sported all the latest everything. I remember going to parties and getting the “up-down” look from all the other girls and thinking to myself that they had no idea that a plus size girl could look this good! With that being said, I want to share my “Starter Kit Must Have Key Pieces for the New Fashionista”. I have also included so examples.

Know that every girl starts out not having the first clue about fashion, we are not born with a skill that let’s us know what is fashionable. It’s all about work, and research. You will get there! Just like I got here, well I think anyway. I just hope that this helps kick off something great for all you new plus size fashionistas out there! Now go on and start a fashion revolution!

Goo-goo Ga-ga over Fashion!

Goo-goo Ga-ga over Fashion!
"Bibs aren't just for the kiddos anymore! No way!"
Let me tell you, if I was sporting a bib like this back in the day, I would have been THE hottest kid on the block! For SURE! * snap* Bib necklaces are one of the hottest trending items right now and definitely one of the smartest. Bib necklaces are used to create an embellished neckline. Strap one of these bad boys on, and it will instantly transform that simple unit of yours into a runway show piece! Ow!
I'm glad I had one available when I had to wear my little black dress twice in a weekend? Oh sure…like it's never happened to you? I was on a weekend getaway with some good friends. On our last night there, we decided to go to an All-Black party...sigh…unfortunately for me, I already wore my only black outfit the first night out there. Being that I was the only "endowed" chick amongst my girls, borrowing a dress wasn't an option. An accessory bib was the perfect accessory to make that dress into "another one". Oh yes…it worked out juuuust fine!
Bib necklaces are definite must have!
Here are some of my personal picks:
(purple beads from FB / $12)
(all black fabric/jewel piece from LB / $40)
(black beaded bib from LB / $30)
(multi colored bib from F21 / $10)
(black pleather fringe bib from F21 / $15)

The PERFECT Plus Size Black Dress

Every girl needs a great plus size black dress. For me, my trouble area is my booty and my tummy, so finding the right length and the right A-line taper is essential! Plus, you need the perfect sleeve, neck line, and material. So stresseful! But, I was lucky enough to be sent some samples from Torrid and this dress was one of them. At first glance, I'm thinking - ehh - it's cool. But, when I put it on - it was THE dress I've been looking for! The cut, the tailoring the details and the fantastic belt that is included, was everything I ever wanted. While I am a clearance junkie, I absolutely recommend you scoop up this dress. The belt does come off, so you can interchange belts to switch up the look, and truly - this dress style is timeless.
Thank you so much to Torrid and special shout out to Spanx (of course!). I had the best night ever since I felt confident and beautiful in my dress. And, as you girls know - I don't mind saying I'm a size 26/28. So, if I can do it - so can YOU! Email me your pics in this dress at - I want to see you strutting your style.

Just wild enough. Darling dress has a seamed geometric neckline and bust, cap sleeves, a banded empire waist and a bit of stretch. Topping it off is a ribbed stretch belt with a front made of textured leopard-print faux patent. Side zip entry.
  • Size 1 is 40" long from shoulder
  • 96% polyester, 4% spandex; 100% polyester lining
  • Machine wash
