Finding the plus size fashionista inside
by Nicole Anderson - JR Plus Fashion Editor
I’ve found recently that a lot of plus size girls around my age (24) have had issues finding their fashionista within. Growing up, I was always bigger than the other girls. Clothes and fashion were not really a part of my life. Let’s just say that I didn’t make the greatest fashion choices at times. For me it was band tee shirts, Dickie brand pants in every color cut into capris, and men’s jeans. I was a tomboy. After high school I started working at a department store part time and I started to tap into the fashionista inside me. Over the next year, I started to notice that the Junior’s department that I was working in had less and less that I was able to fit into. Perhaps I was getting larger, but I swear they were using less fabric to make those tiny little tops. After that year I moved out of the great state of Iowa and made an interesting decision to move to Montana. That is where the full-blown plus size fabulousness burst out of me! Iowa by no means is a fashion mecca but it has some really great things to offer. Montana, where I was located anyway, was dry as a bone for ladies of the plus size persuasion. So this is where I really had to use my skills to get the looks that I wanted and needed. Over the next two years with no Lane Bryant, Torrid, or DEB in sight, I learned that with style its quality over quantity. Every fashionista wants the latest and greatest fashions and is willing to jump on the trend train as fast as their little size zero butts can take them. But for the larger ladies of the world it’s not that easy. In Montana I noticed that if I had a few key pieces in my wardrobe that I would be able to rock the streets of MT like it was my own personal fashion runway. Girls in the town that I was in loved fashion and sported all the latest everything. I remember going to parties and getting the “up-down” look from all the other girls and thinking to myself that they had no idea that a plus size girl could look this good! With that being said, I want to share my “Starter Kit Must Have Key Pieces for the New Fashionista”. I have also included so examples.
